The papers contained in this module were written to assist my master’s and doctoral students to write clearly about their research projects, and also, I hope, to stimulate debate and argument (the term “thesis” means argument). As the medium of instruction in the university where I supervise is English, I have named the module English for Research Purposes: Selected Papers. However, many of the topics dealt with in these papers are not linguistic per se, but part of the broader issue of operating in a research context. This is because writing in a research context involves far more than an advanced vocabulary or clever use of words, as I hope these papers will show.
